POSITION SUMMARY:
The Volunteer is responsible for performing volunteer duties as they relate to operational department functions. Always maintains strict confidentiality and discretion according to HIPAA requirements. In addition to the specific accountabilities listed below, all positions are required to demonstrate customer skills, including friendliness, courtesy, responsiveness, and empathy. However, it must be emphasized to all volunteers that patient and volunteer safety is paramount, and that under no circumstances may volunteers substitute for licensed medical professionals.
Duties may include:
- Regular rounding for patient/family comfort and support
- Answer general questions
- Rounding on patients, multiple times per shift if feasible
- Provide company to patients who express interest
- Offer comfort items (blankets or pillows)
- Provide reading glasses, puzzle books and newspapers
- Assist with T.V. and charging phones
- With RN permission only, get water or snacks per patient request.
- Relay relevant or urgent concerns/needs to MST staff.
- Keep hallways clear
- Refill blanket warmer
- Stocking basic supplies in rooms or hallways such as:
- Gloves
- Emesis Bags
- Droplet masks
Volunteer should avoid the following:
- Cleaning of patient rooms after discharge or other more extensive
- housekeeping tasks
- Volunteers do not handle complaints or concerns
- Giving advice or education
- Moving or assisting a patient physically, you may push someone in a wheelchair under a nurse's direction.
- Computer usage
- Maintaining equipment
- Adjusting bed without prior RN permission
- Avoid entering isolation precaution rooms
- Arriving for their shift if you have cold or flu symptoms
