PUBLIC PROGRAM DAY TOUR GUIDE VOLUNTEER

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct guided tours of Lowell Observatory campus including the Clark telescope and the Pluto discovery telescope.

Greet visitors in a professional and courteous manner; maintain a professional image with appropriate dress, conduct and language

Maintain accurate, up-to-date time sheets for your volunteer service

QUALIFICATIONS

        No previous astronomy experience is necessary

        Possess good public speaking and interpersonal skills

        Must enjoy interacting with visitors

        Must be effective at dealing with large, diverse groups of people

        Enthusiasm and interest for STEM and history

        Must pass a background check

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN AS A LOWELL OBSERVATORY VOLUNTEER

You will be provided with an overview of the Observatory’s history and mission (including related reading material); facility orientation; introduction to department supervisors; timekeeping procedures, scheduling and attendance, dress code

Guided tour training will be provided by the public program volunteer liaison

Familiarity with the history of Lowell Observatory including the Clark telescope and the Pluto Discovery telescope.

Ability to point out and give directions to campus locations, buildings and museums.

Ability to explain the day time activities schedule to visitors.

Ability to answer questions about Lowell history, current research and basic astronomy

WORKING CONDITIONS

Activities are performed both indoors and outside during the day, with extended periods of standing and walking around campus at 7000 feet elevation and over uneven terrain. Winter weather is cold and summer weather can be hot and rainy at times; appropriate dress and footwear is essential for comfort and safety.

Activities require good speaking and listening skills.

This role requires good physical mobility with walking outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.
