Description

If you love mountain biking and want to help make mountain biking a more equitable sport, consider joining our team! Gear Girls coaches serve as instructors and role models for the next generation of young women riders. Coaching with us is an opportunity to share your skillset, positively influence girls’ lives in your community, and combine your passion with your work.

Gear Girls uses mountain biking, trail work, and snow sports to build confidence, outdoor competence, community, and character in young women grades 4-8. Girls learn practical skills in trail building, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing, while absorbing lessons in mindfulness, teamwork, and determination that will prepare them for life’s bigger challenges.

Girls from Flagstaff, AZ, meet weekly for ten weeks per session and are coached by a supportive all-women staff in a low pressure setting.

All programs are provided at no cost to participants, with the Arizona Trail Association covering all associated expenses; transportation, gear, healthy snacks, swag for participants, and other resources, materials, and tools as needed. Our goal is to eliminate all barriers to participation so that youth can explore trails close to home, connect with landscapes on a deeper level, and be actively involved in the stewardship of public lands and the Arizona Trail.

Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead mountain biking practices for groups of up to 10 participants. If coaching in the winter session, co-lead cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking outings.

  • Provide age and developmentally appropriate instruction in mountain biking and team building.

  • Communicate safety parameters. Monitor and maintain safety at all times. Respond to participants’ medical and emotional needs.

  • Serve as a role model and guide participants in appropriate behavior and attitudes. Fuel the fun!

  • Collaborate with 1-2 other coaches at each practice; communicate plans and delegate tasks as needed.

  • Connect with families at drop off and pickup. Foster a welcoming community.

  • Be an exemplary representative of the Arizona Trail Association and its mission.

The 2024 fall session will begin September 6th (Fridays 2-5, Saturdays 11-2) and run through November 9th. Come to one outing, or come to all - happy to have you involved!
